The Casual Supper Club is a potluck casual dinner theme held on the last Saturday of the month. If you are the host, you may change the date if you have to. Everyone is welcome. If you are single or your spouse is out of town, don’t think you can’t come. This is not couple's dining. This is a very casual event.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR HOSTING:
The host for the month chooses the food theme. i.e.: chicken, beef, Italian, Mexican, International, Cook out, 1950’s, Vegetarian, Octoberfest, Old World, Potluck, Costume, etc. Use your imagination. The host calls each name on the list as a reminder. The host will ask you to bring one of the following: Main dish, salad and bread, dessert, side dish, (specify quantity for 12-15 people) beer or wine box, (appetizers are optional). All you need to host is a sense of fun, paper goods, name tags, pop and coffee.

YOU WILL BE ASKED TO HOST APPROXIMATELY EVERY 3 YEARS. EVERYONE WILL BE REQUIRED TO HOST.

SPECIAL NOTES:
1. If you have volunteered to host, but are unable to host that month, YOU are responsible to find someone to host for you.
2. If you have replied that you will come to a supper and have to cancel, you are still responsible for bringing what you committed to.
3 . Please remember this is a casual get-together. Jeans, sweats, shorts, swimsuits, costumes are totally mandatory. We want it to be maximum fun with minimum work.

Hope to see you soon. New friends are always welcome.

All NF neighbors are welcome. Call Gigi Perry to join, 897-3995. Updated: 2/3/10.

Neighborhood Babysitters
If you would like to have your name made available on this web site to advertise your babysitting services, please email the webmaster, with your parent's permission, and you will be added to the list on the SERVICES page.

Announcements & News

KCP&L has recently notified homeowners whose property is impacted by transmission lines running through our neighborhood that they will be REMOVING a large number of trees and vegetation along this corridor. This will essentially decimate many NF residents' backyards. Stump removal will be at the homeowners' expense, and there is no plan for tree replacement. Property values will be affected for all in our neighborhood, NOT just the homeowners who lose their trees. A meeting with KCP&L has been scheduled for this Thursday, April 29th, at 5:30 at Oxford Middle School. The Board of NFHA is encouraging everyone to attend to voice our concerns and objections. Kensington Manor will also be in attendance as well as Dave Hill, representative of grounds with Blue Valley School District. Please plan to attend and spread the word. Any questions, feel free to contact any Board member. Nancy Hass NFHA Board President .

Please see Financial Report page for information on Fiscal 2010 Dues.

ATTENTION: There have been a number of thefts in Nottingham Forest in the past several weeks. Items have been stolen from inside cars parked on the street or in driveways and from garages when the door has been left open. Additionally, a resident had their car stolen from their driveway during the middle of the night, it is still missing, and the police are not hopeful of recovering it. Please be diligent in securing your home, cars, and belongings!!

NEWS FROM THE BOARD - Posted 3/26/09

* There have been questions concerning the lettering on the new monuments along Switzer. The words "Nottingham Forest" face the "interior" of the subdivision, 121st and 123rd streets, not Switzer. There will be plaques with the letters "NF" placed on the monuments, once they are completed, that will face Switzer. This design was approved by the Board at the advice of the contractor. His rationale: when traveling down a busy street such as Switzer, a motorist doesn't have time to read lots of letters. The "NF" is short and succinct and will draw attention to our subdivision. The complete interior lettering obviously gives our full name. Hope this answers any questions; as usual, please be patient as this project progresses.

* FYI: Deffenbaugh is now enforcing the limit of six bags of yard waste per home. Please don't put out any more than six bags, as they will no longer pick them up, and it is very unsightly to have trash setting in driveways for next week's pickup.

Deffenbaugh Disposal Service Changes - Questions Contact Steve Parker at

More updates to follow... to select container size you must fill out and return the form to sent to each homeowner in the mail.

With the new Deffenbaugh Industries service coming on line sometime in March/April/May 2009 the NFHA board wants to inform the homeowners that, as of now, Board member Steve Parker, 322-1039, is the board trash/disposal contact.

Of course, as was stated in the recent correspondence by Deffenbaugh Industries:
Any further questions or concerns should FIRST be directed to Mike Dale at 913-667-8791,
Deffenbaugh Industries' representative for Nottingham Forest.

1. Deffenbaugh Disposal Service (DDS) will be changing service for Nottingham
Forest effective March 1, 2009. Residents will have their choice of a 65 or 95
gallon polykart. Dimensions for the 65 gallon kart are 42” h, 25” w, 26” d.
and will hold approximately 2 yellow plastic bags. Dimensions for the 95 gallon
kart are 46” h, 26” w, 33” d. and will hold 3+ yellow plastic bags.

2. Only household waste may be placed in the polykart. Each resident is allowed
up to 6 bags of yard waste, placed beside the kart. Additional bags of yard waste
must have a sticker on them at a cost of $1.25 per sticker, purchased from DDS.
Exception: additional bags of household waste may be placed beside the kart on the
pickups following Christmas and the 4th of July. Collection of yard waste may
change if Johnson County or the City of Overland Park bans it in the landfill.

3. All karts and bags must be placed at the curb. Concessions will be made for
Americans with disabilities. If a resident is protected under the ADA, arrangements
can be made with DDS for pickup at the garage at no additional charge.

4. Extra karts may be ordered from DDS at a cost of $5.00 per month, billed
directly to the individual homeowner by DDS.

5. Worn-out karts will be replaced by DDS at no charge. Should damage occur that
is caused by the homeowner, such as running over the kart, the homeowner will be
charged $70.00 + tax for a replacement kart.

6. Recycling is optional, although strongly encouraged, for NF homeowners.
Residents will contract directly with DDS for recycling services/bins at a cost of
$2.90 per home per month, billed every 6 months. Recycling will have a cap of 6%
increase annually.

7. If DDS misses a home(s), please contact Mike Dale immediately at 913-667-8791
for pickup no later than the following day (excluding Sundays.) FYI: On normal
weather days, DDS is typically finished with all pickups for Nottingham Forest by
1:00 P.M.

8. Special pickups for large items are to be arranged directly with DDS. The
resident will be billed individually at a cost of $10.00 and up.

9. Spring cleanup drives are set by the City of Overland Park, not DDS, and
alternate every other year for east or west of Antioch.

DDS will suspend all trash collection for homeowners whose dues are delinquent.
Service will be reinstated upon notification from the Board of NF that delinquent
dues have been paid.

Click here for pictures of the two bin choices.

Recycling will still be optional.

turns meeting at each other's homes, the Nottingham Forest park area and pool.

Changes in NF Board Procedure & Policy
The Board of NFHA would like to notify you of several changes in Board procedure and policy. Beginning immediately, any resident's complaint will be fielded by one Board member assigned to address neighbors' concerns for that six-week period. Furthermore, the Board has determined that we will only address violations of deed restrictions and will not serve as a mediation body between conflicts with neighbors. Thanks for all of NF continued support to the Board!

Care of Pine Trees Affected By Needle Blight - the year has been very stressful on pine trees due to the heat and needle blight. I talked to a tree specialist and he recommended the following steps to try and save these trees. This Fall, pick-up needles on the ground, cut off dead branches, water and fertilize with a pine fertilizer. In the Spring (mid-April), spray all the needles with a copper bordeaux fungicide before the "candles" on the needles develop. The candles are the new growth on the trees. The most affected pines are Austrian, Ponderosa and Mugo. Contact a tree specialist if you have any specific questions on the pine trees in your yard. You can also Google "needle blight" for articles on this subject.

Nottingham Forest Cooking Class

The class meets the second Tuesday morning of each month September through May
(except December) at a different neighbor's home to enjoy a tantalizing menu
prepared by Dorothy Ebner. Dorothy is a local cooking instructor and caterer. The
cost for class is $20 and includes recipes and lunch. For further information,
including class location and menu, contact Barbara Ramsey at 913-685-1880.

Boats, Trailers, etc. Parked In Violation - Notice 6/23/05: Many homes are in violation of the deed restrictions governing Nottingham Forest which state that “no vehicle, truck, trailer, bus, campers, boats or other apparatus, except passenger automobiles, shall be left or stored on said property, except in an enclosed garage.” Letters are being sent to each homeowner we see in violation. It is the Board’s goal to maintain the integrity of Nottingham Forest, so we thank you in advance for your cooperation in relocating this type of property.

Placement of Political Signs
Please avoid placing political campaign signs in the common ground or by the neighborhood sign monuments. As a neighborhood, we do not support any particular candidate or issue.

SOME WARNING WHEN HIRING A REMODELER (posted 08-04-04)

Your NFHA Board has received inquiries from our residents as to how to warn other residents on what home remodeler’s not to use. We cannot post individual remodeler names on our web site or in our newsletter for a recommendation or blacklist; however, we can offer the following advice to you if you are considering a home remodel:

Have defined Scope of Work to be completed to obtain bids
Check with the Better Business Bureau on your list of contractor(s)
Are the contractors licensed in Kansas
Obtain references for other similar work completed
Be sure you have a Overland Park Building Permit (if required)
Check Nottingham Forest Restriction of Deed requirements, available on-line in our Web Site
Have a signed contract containing, but not limited to:
Scope of Work to be completed
Work schedule
Quoted cost of work and how to manage cost and scheduling of changes
How to handle Progress Payments, and a Hold Back Dollar clause until final completion and acceptance of work
Arrange for a Final Inspection for acceptance, prior to releasing Hold Back Dollars
Assignment and subcontracting of work
Liability and Workmen’s Compensation Insurance
Waiver of Liens (mechanic’s lien)
Guarantees of work
Assignment of guarantees and warranties for sub-contractor work and equipment (appliances as an example) and materials (roof materials as an example)

If a contractor refuses any of the above, then this might be a warning signal of potential problems to come.

Your NFHA Board

Speeding within our subdivision

Slow down and follow posted speed limits. The NF Board has devoted a lot of discussion on how to handle the speeding issue in NF. Help has been sought from the OP councilman who represents our neighborhood (Terry Goodman, who is also a NF resident), and to have him solicit ideas from the city of Overland Park. The second step was to bring in a mobile speed monitoring trailer so residents and others can check their speeds to the posted speed limits. The trailer was brought in on 3/8/04 by the OP Police. Plans are to move it around the neighborhood with concentration on Nieman, 121/Bluejacket and 123rd streets, and possibly Goodard between 121st and 123rd streets and elsewhere.

Other solutions are being considered and more information on this issue will be posted here and in the NF newsletter.

Update 3/23/04
Dear NF residents:

My name is Brian Shields, and I am the City Traffic Engineer for Overland Park. Councilmember Goodman asked me to write a short message to outline some of the initiatives the City is undertaking to combat speeding problems like you have mentioned.

Some of the solutions offered typically include speed bumps (currently against City policy), lower speed limits, all-way stops and similar measures. Most of these are not possible or practical. Let me give you a few short reasons. The City has adopted federal guidelines covering the installation of all traffic control devices. For an all-way stop to be installed, certain minimum amounts of traffic must be present throughout a typical day. We only have about 35 to 40 locations city-wide that meet these guidelines (which is why you don't see many). Placing stop signs where they are not warranted will typically result in motorists having a higher disregard for them. As for reduced speed limits, drivers tend to drive at a speed that feels comfortable and appropriate for the given roadway conditions. We typically set the speed limit on a collector at 30 mph and for the most part a majority of drivers will tend to drive at or near this speed. Unfortunately, there are those drivers that are determined to make things bad for all of us by driving way above the speed limit.

We have been dealing with this issue for a long time and are proposing a new method for attacking the problem. You may have heard of it ... traffic calming. Traffic calming is a way to narrow roadways intermittently or install speed humps to slow traffic 24/7. We are working on a pilot project for this summer to test the effectiveness of traffic calming measures in OP. When the results are in this fall, we hope that the City Council will realize the benefits of using traffic calming measures in OP and approve a full program that would give residents a voice in the way traffic is managed in their neighborhood. If you would like to learn more about our proposed traffic calming program, please go to the following link:

http://www.opkansas.org/_Res/Traffic_&_Transportation/traffic_calming.cfm

We will collect some data in your neighborhood to determine the extent of speeding on the streets as well as the traffic volumes. This will help us later should we have a traffic calming program in place and need to select some locations for improvement.

I know this has been a short e-mail, but I would be happy to answer any of your questions in more detail. Please feel free to contact me by e-mail or by phone (913) 895-6024.

Sincerely,
Brian Shields
City Traffic Engineer

Overland Park’s Ordinance for Tree Maintenance

NOTE: In order to view and print this document, you must have Adobe Acrobat 3.0 or higher. This is a free application that you can download from the web.

TREE Maintenance: All homeowners need to take responsibility for the new trees on their property. Please water the trees as needed, especially during long dry spells, to keep the tree healthy. New trees that are not maintained by the homeowner will not be replaced a second time.

Poor Tree Maintenance ExampleTree and Shrub Maintenance Policy according to the City of Overland Park:
Dead trees and broken or dead limbs that present a hazard to the public must be removed.

You must keep shrubs and trees trimmed to eliminate sight distance problems on corner properties.

Public rights-of-way such as streets and sidewalks must remain clear of limbs and branches. The minimum height clearance over sidewalks is 8 feet. The minimum height clearance over streets is 12 feet and for improved thoroughfares and designated truck routes the height clearance is 13 feet.

The tree to the left is an example of a tree that has not been properly maintained.
